NEW - Understanding the new NFPA High Strength 'F' Test
Powered rescue tools for emergency situations are regulated internationally using the NFPA standards test. Through a series of testing measures, different letters correlate with specific tests, and numbers rank the performance ability of a particular tool - for example A1, A2, A3 etc.
Until recently, these tests were classified from A - E with a numerical ranking up to 9. However, the NFPA standards have now introduced a further test - category 'F' with an increased strength rating, expanding the category of testing from five tests to six for rating cutter and combination tools in their ability to cut high-strength metals. The new test is a “High Strength Materials” test, otherwise known as the F bar cut test.

In the F test, cutters face an ultra-high-strength, low-alloy rectangular tube and can earn a performance level
between 1 (1” X 2” X 0.065”, outside dimension by wall thickness) up to the highest rating of 7 (2” X 4” X 0.250”).
The rectangular shape of the metal tested mimics the more common vehicle B-posts to provide greater insight into the ability of this tool for use with this application. By using a treated 4130 ultra-high-strength steel, the test can better evaluate cutters for today’s extrication challenges.
LUKAS rescue tools perform exceptionally well under both new and existing NFPA performance tests, earning F5 and F4 ratings for nearly a dozen cutters and combination tools from the eDRAULIC® 2.0 (E2) collection and the eDRAULIC Watertight Extrication Tools (EWXT) range with the S 799 E2 Cutter, S 799 EWXT Cutter and S 799 10,000 PSI Cutter all receiving an exceptional NFPA rating of 9 in categories A, B, C, D and E.
